Collisions involving Halton police on the rise

Halton Police were involved in more car crashes so far this year than last year - but fewer were the fault of the agent behind the wheel.

A report submitted by Police Chief Gary Crowell Halton Thursday's meeting of the Halton Regional Police Service Board, said there were a total of 70 Halton Regional Police Service vehicle collisions - $ 158 780 in damages between the January 1 and June 30 this year.

There were a total of 59 collisions during the same period last year - with damages of $ 61 789.That was until the year 2009 when there were 57 collisions and damage of $ 111 392 in the first six months of the year.

Of 70 collisions this year the police, 29 were classified in the report as non-avoidable - when someone hit the car of the officer.

The remaining 41 were considered preventable - the fault of the agent.

The report broke the collisions avoided in several categories, citing an accident occurred because the officer was following too closely, eight collisions occurred because the officer was driving too fast for conditions, 26 accidents occurred because the officer fell into something (failure to comply clearance), four accidents occurred because of wrong turns, a transition due to a bad pass and a collision because the officer failed to yield right of way.

The 2011 numbers represent collisions up 18 per cent of all collisions in the 2010 figures with the same period - than non-preventable collisions jumped 81 percent.

Global avoidable collisions fell by five percent over the same period last year.

When asked why the preservation of things is an issue, Crowell said the problem could be that new agents are not used to drive more police and therefore may think they have cleared an obstacle when in fact they have not.

Crowell also noted that because the police vehicles are emergency vehicles, Halton Police report any collision, even if there is no visible damage.
