Cleveland Indians place Michael Brantley and Josh Tomlin on disabled list
CLEVELAND, Ohio &mash; Indians placed outfielder Michael Brantley (mysterious problem right wrist) and right-hander Josh Tomlin (elbow sprain) on the disabled list Friday.
Jim Thome, acquired from the Twins on Thursday night took place on the list Brantley. Left-handed reliever Nick Hagadone was recalled from Class AAA Columbus.
Brantley has his wrists limited to 12 starts in August. The first definitive sign of trouble came 3 to 4 August, when he was sitting on the games in Boston.
Indians head trainer Lonnie Soloff said he does not know exactly what ails Brantley because the "presentation" has changed.
"Two weeks ago, he clearly pointed tendonitis," Soloff said. "But [Thursday], the symptoms manifested themselves in a different place."
The change has required advanced diagnostics Friday, including a bone scan and CT scan to better evaluate the bony structures in his hand.
"There could be many things," said Soloff. "We have no idea how long he will be out until we get [advanced] results back."
Brantley was examined by renowned hand specialist Dr. Thomas Graham at the Cleveland Clinic.
Brantley, hitting 0266 with 63 runs in 114 games, is on the DL for the first time. The move is retroactive to Tuesday.
Tomlin (12-7, 4.25 ERA) has informed the owners he felt discomfort in his elbow during his start Wednesday against Seattle. He gave 11 points on six hits in four innings of a 9-2 loss. Its speed has dropped significantly starting in recent years.
Tests revealed a sprained ankle, putting the balance of his season in jeopardy.Soloff said Tomlin will not throw for two weeks, then be re-examined.
"If he is asymptomatic at that time, we will begin an accelerated return to throw program," said Soloff. "His presentation, and our position as a team, will guide this process."
Tomlin, a second-year major league, entered Friday ranked tied for ninth in the American League in victories. It is on the DL for the first time.
