Lynn Jennings shares her life and spirit at local race

Eddi Turco of Arlington, Va. was the eventual winner of the 10K event as Peter Offenbacher was the first place finisher in the 5K run.In May, one of America’s best-ever runners packs up her car and drives away from her Portland, Ore., home, leaving behind its multiple rooms and furniture and clothes-stuffed closets. Her passenger is a dog named Towhee; the car carries rowing and running kits. A few thousand miles later, Lynn Jennings arrives at her destination: a one-room cabin in Vermont’s Craftsbury Outdoor Center.
Here, five summers in a row, the former Olympian and harrier extraordinaire has spent her days running trails, rowing the waters, riding her bike and directing adult running camps. Here, too, is where she met Michael Whitson, a runner, former participant in its camp and the race director of the Chaptico Classic, which will be held Saturday for the 26th year.
After meeting at Craftsbury, Whitson and Jennings became friends. And when Whitson asked Jennings if she would come to his race as a featured guest, Jennings, who is not known for fulfilling such requests, accepted his invitation. This will be her third year at the event.
Jennings, to be clear, will not be racing Saturday. She has not participated in a running race, even just for fun, since she retired from professional running more than a decade ago. Rather, as runners Saturday are waiting for the announcement of results and awards, Jennings will share stories about her career and show a video of racing highlights.
Born in 1960, Jennings is the holder of 39 national titles. Rising from the slowest runner on the boys team during her freshman year at The Bromfield School in Harvard, Mass., to become one of the best high school runners in the country, she went on to Princeton University, where her running experience was one defined by highs and lows. That mix of successes and setbacks, however, only seemed to amp up Jennings’ determination. A year after graduation, though, she fared poorly in the U.S. Olympic Trials, and afterward considered leaving the sport. Had it not been for a fellow New Englander, Joan Benoit, Jennings might have really done it.
