The accidental designer
Growing up in Toowoomba, Finch fled the nest when he was 17 and headed to France where he fell in love with the beauty of haute couture. But it was a visit to London, which had the potential to change everything.
There was an interview with the prestigious fashion school Central Saint Martins, including the former include Stella McCartney and Hussein Chalayan. It went well, but the exorbitant fees for foreign students put his ambitions on ice. Finch returned home.
"I could not even get a job in retail in Brisbane so I started telemarketing, selling copiers," Finch, 28, said.
"Strangely, it has led to a job in a wholesale fashion business, so I started there and discovered I was good enough in sales. Ultimately, I wanted to be a creator, but I had to take the back door. "
After perfecting his skills in sales, Finch returned to London in 2004, providing an internship with Ashe Peacock, who has sold in Australia and New Zealand for the British label with its fashionable shops and agency Antipodium.
In early 2006, the team found a gap in the supply of Shop: wardrobe staples with a directional edge.Sister Fenella Peacock (whose empire line label was a success of the 80) came on board, the work of Fremantle in Western Australia, and Finch got his first try to conceive. The range Antipodium first capsule, designed as a one-off, was exhibited at London Fashion Week in December 2006. It was an instant hit, championed by British Vogue and snapped up by luxury department store Liberty.
"At the time, the gypsy skirt reigned supreme," Finch said of the mood and bobo. "Antipodium, however, was clean. Emma Elwick of Vogue she sums up as "confident simplicity." We had an overwhelming response to the first collection and doubled with the second season. The label is kind of happened by accident.
