Crews battle large fires across Oregon and brace for more lightning strikes
Fire crews continued to battle wildfires across Oregon Saturday as fire officials worried about more lightning strikes overnight and Sunday.
“The fire danger is extreme, and we expect more of the same that’s been going on since Wednesday,” said Jeri Chase, spokeswoman for the Oregon Department of Forestry.
Red flag warnings of lightning strikes were in effect for Southern Oregon until 10 p.m. Saturday, until 3 p.m. Sunday for Central Oregon, and until 11 p.m. Sunday in Northeast Oregon, Chase said.
"It is still very, very hot and very, very dangerous out there," she said.
At least eight fires or complexes of fires covering 1,000 acres or more were burning in Oregon today, according to the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center.
The largest is the Hancock Fire Complex near Clarno, which has grown to 18,000 acres or about 28 square miles. The fires are burning on both sides of Oregon 218 and on both banks of the John Day River, the coordination center reports.
The fire forced 55 young campers and a dozen staff for the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry camp to leave the Hancock Field Station. Fires no longer threaten the station, the center reports, but they do threaten 15 homes and 50 outbuildings.
More than 35 fire starts near Warm Springs called the High Cascades Complex and a group called the DSL complex, which closed Oregon 78 with smoke southeast of Burns, each are scorching about 7,000 acres of grass, sage brush and junipers.
The remote West Little fire in difficult terrain near Burns Junction in Malheur County has spread over 4,400 acres.
