Navy to in-source jobs at NAS Corpus Christi, Kingsville
— The Navy will absorb 14 jobs that were under contract with a private company at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi and Naval Air Station Kingsville.Lockheed Martin Global Training and Logistics' contract with the Navy for non-guard services ends Sept. 30, company spokesman Warren Wright said. The company provides security support and maintains weapons in the armory.
Eight jobs in Corpus Christi and six in Kingsville will be affected as part of a few hundred at scattered sites nationwide, Wright said.
"Many of those employees will be hired by the government, but we don't know who they are," Wright said.
Wright said the company knew about a year ago the government would in-source the jobs.
The company notified the Texas Workforce Commission to be on standby in case some of the employees aren't transferred to the federal civil service payroll, Wright said.
The federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act of 1988 requires companies with more than 100 full-time employees laying off more than 50 people to report the layoffs at least 60 days in advance.
Those notices are reported to workforce commission officials in Austin who notify local workforce branches, said Monika De La Garza, Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend spokeswoman.
Notification sets up transitional services for affected employees, including information about unemployment insurance, training programs and skills workshops, De La Garza said.
Lockheed Martin, based in Bethesda, Md., is a global security company of 126,000 employees. About 28,000 workers are scattered among sites in Texas, Georgia, California and six other states.
Lockheed Martin does research, design, development and manufacturing of advanced technology systems, products and services.
This possibly also has to do with both cost cutting and the eventual winding down of worldwide military operations as percived by eventual troop withdrawals. This will create a large influx of military personnel in need of jobs and what better way than to have them do jobs that were originally assigned to them before being bidded out to outside contractors.
