Lincoln-Way N. students visit nursing home

FRANKFORT — A group of Lincoln-Way North High School students shared their time and talents with nursing home residents, entertaining them with musical duets and engaging them in a game of Bingo or Wii Bowling.

“We wanted to brighten their day and hopefully make a difference,” said senior and Color Guard Capt. Laura Reis, who coordinated the visits with Marching Phoenix Drum Major Eli Ramirez.

Members of the marching band and color guard decided to visit Park Villa Nursing and Rehab Center in Palos Heights on July 23 and 30 after discussing ways to give back to the community.

“We decided on the nursing home because we knew the residents enjoyed the music, and we thought they would also enjoy playing games and having some company,” Laura said.

Sixteen students visited the nursing home July 23; nearly 50 visited July 30.

Laura’s mom, Sandy Reis, said she was impressed by the students’ efforts.

“The unique thing about these students is that this community event wasn’t for a grade or community service hours,” she said. “They just wanted to give their time to make a difference in the lives of others.”

St. Joseph School expands its preschool program

LOCKPORT — The St. Joseph School principal and staff announced the expansion of the program for 3-year-olds for the school year 2011-12.

“We have the wonderful opportunity to offer our 3-year-old students the options to join our four-day program that meets Monday-Thursday,” Principal Lynne Scheffler said.

“Our preschool teacher, Mrs. Jill Kunst, has been working throughout the summer and is so excited for the opportunity to engage our youngest learners in hands-on activities, engaging lessons, and additional technology experiences to enhance their learning opportunities.

One week into the new school year, principals and student leaders had nothing but good news for the Lincoln-Way Community High School District’s Board of Education Thursday at its first meeting since school opened.

“It’s almost like the kids were never gone when you go into a classroom,” said Principal Scott Tingley of Lincoln-Way East. “They are back and engaged and working extremely hard.”

Classes resumed for the district’s four high schools on Aug. 18 and the student council presidents said they are wasting no time in welcoming the freshmen to their new schools and planning homecoming activities.

Marissa Lee, a Lincoln-Way Central senior and student council president, told the board members that a freshmen orientation helped the new faces feel more comfortable in their new school.

“All the freshmen came in with their deer in the headlight eyes,” she said. “And they left with a better understanding of what Lincoln-Way is and that the upperclassmen are here to help them.”

Jennifer McGowan, a senior and Lincoln-Way West Student Council president, said West hosted a pep assembly on the first day of school to start the year off in the right direction.

“It was really exciting, and I could just tell that everyone was pumped for this year,” she said.

Lincoln-Way Central Principal Steve Provis said the school is paying close attention to the construction project on Route 30 because of concerns it might affect school transportation, but so far student buses have made it to school on time, he said.

All four schools have started planning their homecoming week activities. Lincoln-Way North, Central and East host their homecomings on Sept. 24, and Lincoln-Way West following a week later on Oct. 1. Lincoln-Way Central’s homecoming will have a Hawaiian theme, East will have a masquerade and West’s theme is Candy Land. North has yet to decide on its theme.
