9 distinct Indiana regions found in study

To much of America, Indiana is the epitome of what is often dismissively called “flyover country”: boring, inconsequential and, most of all, whitebread.

Even most Hoosiers might be unable to identify more than a handful of distinct regions in their state: “The Region” near Chicago, perhaps. A few large cities and a lot of open farm land. The southern hill country.

But a conservative think tank's soon-to-be-released study of census, employment, political and other data suggests that Indiana comprises no less than nine regions – each with its own unique economy, culture, politics and needs.

Understanding that often-overlooked diversity is crucial, its author suggests, if the various regions hope to work together to address those needs.

“I am interested in the role of institutions – the rules of the game that restrict behavior – and I found that, despite the political rhetoric in the Statehouse, Indiana is not the homogenous whole that we are led to believe,” said Cory Craig, an Indiana University student and a 2006 graduate of Blackhawk Christian School in Fort Wayne. He conducted the research as an intern for the Indiana Policy Review. “Treating the state as a whole can produce institutional challenges and impede the ability of the state to progress.”

Demotroplis

As the name suggests, this region – Lake, LaPorte, Porter and St. Joseph counties in northwest Indiana – tends to support unions, vote Democratic and includes a relatively large number of low-income minorities. Once a major manufacturing hub, less than 21 percent of jobs are in that sector now – less than the state average.

Hoosierland

Comprising DeKalb, Elkhart, Kosciusko , LaGrange, Marshall, Noble and Whitley counties, this region is now more heavily industrialized but tends to vote Republican.
