Redemption on song for relaxed David Tua
Johnny Cash is blaring over the stereo system in David Tua's Onehunga gym and the heavyweight boxer is appropriately dressed in black.
He's very much walking the line with next Saturday's assignment against American Monte Barrett in Manukau.
It's destination unknown for Tua. One minute he's hinting at retirement, the next he's talking about what might lurk down that line as his proud professional career enters its third decade.
The 38-year-old has made it plain that everything hangs on this rematch with Barrett, a tough New Yorker who a year ago became the first man to put Tua on the canvas and was left seething by the controversial draw.
Barrett put off his own plans of retirement to seek another shot at Tua to put the record straight, believing he was robbed by the judges that night in New Jersey.
Tua has never backed away from the thought of stepping in the ring again with Barrett.
But he knew he had to get his Maori TV deal out of the way to do justice to the Barrett fight. Now the decks have been cleared and a lucrative pay-per-view deal with Sky TV makes the fight and the associated risks worthwhile.
Tua says the fight ''feels right'' and believes the ''Redemption'' tag given to the promotion suits him more than it does Barrett.
The Kiwi boxer's trainer, Chris Martin, agrees. Martin has poured over the video of the first fight time and again in recent weeks and is adamant Tua won.
Martin believes the result was clouded by enormity of the historic knockdown rather than Tua's overall dominance. He also believes Tua was wrongly deducted a point by the referee for a 'wrestling'' move against Barrett that proved hugely costly when the judges were asked to tally their cards.
There's been a spiteful build-up to this match, mostly from the angry Barrett. But it all adds up to the prospect of a spiteful evening in store.
"Watching it today, personally, I think David won the fight,'' Martin says, taking a break from training to give Fairfax Media his views.
