GUEST COLUMN: Libraries provide means to improve lives

The American dream is not "something for nothing", not a campaign promise a chicken in every pot (or iPhone in every pocket) but a shared belief that an integral part of freedom is a promise: the possibility of prosperity and success for all without distinction of social class or the circumstances of birth. The Declaration of Independence proclaims that "all men are created equal" and are "endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights", including "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Since our founding, policies have encouraged upward mobility.Free public schools and public libraries free radical ideas were (and still are in some countries), but schools and libraries are institutions deemed necessary in a democracy where all people are equal and entitled to vote. Education and knowledge were then and are now considered key to a better life. My ancestors came to Norway and Sweden to the United States as millions of others, because there was free land to have an opportunity to become owners through their hard work and perseverance in the sculpture on the Dakota Prairie farms , as the first settlers were here in Oregon and others have in the Oklahoma Land Rush.No hereditary fiefs to limit the possibilities, no system of inherited power forced the chance to do well in the United States of America, a country with a shared belief was the opportunity for all. After World War II, Congress passed the GI Bill of Rights (1944) and hundreds of thousands of ex-servicemen and women have earned college, tickets to a better life for themselves and their families n ' was not possible for them without government assistance. It was not just the education of the elite, but for everyone.Congress recently reaffirmed this belief when they passed the Post-9/11 Affairs Education Improvements Act of 2010 helps to support our Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans.
