Magical summer of baseball

First, a reminder: The Crawdads are guaranteed a spot in the South Atlantic League playoffs and will host at least one postseason game at L.P. Frans Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m. Sept. 9.

I'll recap a season of winning baseball in Hickory in next Sunday's "On Deck," preview the first round of the upcoming play-offs and review manager Bill Richardson's take on the most valuable members of the 2011 squad.

Today, I'd like to look back on my own summer of baseball - a summer that has passed too quickly as we now stand poised on the cusp of autumn.

I have been to approximately 40 baseball games this summer, ranging from Coastal Plain League contests to Major League games in Atlanta, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

I have sat just behind the third base dugout at Knights Stadium, on the very top row of the upper deck at Orioles Park at Camden Yards, and at just about every level in between. The view was great from all of them.

Just as there is no crying in baseball, there are also no bad seats.

I watched the sun sparkling off the dome of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., and the full moon hanging like a slow curve ball over Sims Legion Field in Gastonia. The sunsets were spectacular in both Asheville and Charlotte, and there is no prettier time at L.P. Frans than in the golden hour of twilight.

My favorite view remains, however, the nighttime Atlanta skyline as seen from the upper deck at Turner Field.

I witnessed ferocious thunderstorms roll over Knights Stadium, L.P. Frans Stadium and Turner Field, with crackling lightning, howling winds and driving rain, but was rained out only once all summer - a late May evening at Knights Stadium.

Ichiro Suzuki made an amazing catch in Washington, Derrek Lee bashed a walk-off, extra-inning homerun in Baltimore, but the most exciting player I watched all summer was Hickory shortstop Jurickson Profar. He is indeed special.

I saw former Crawdad standouts Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen solidify their claims to Major League stardom with the Pittsburgh Pirates in a pair of late July games against the Braves in Atlanta.
