Kaiti Cochren to resume school at USI
Forced to end her basketball career and withdraw from Eastern Kentucky University in January due to continuing epileptic seizures, Kaiti Cochren will resume school Monday at the University of Southern Indiana.
“I’m all right,” the 22-year-old former Wood Memorial basketball standout and 2007 Gibson County Female Athlete of the Year said Tuesday afternoon.
“The seizures have never really stopped, and I’m still on medication. I can’t drive, so I’ve talked with the USI people about taking classes online.
“That’s what I plan to do.”
The 6-foot-5 center’s 10 shot-blocks in Wood Memorial’s 2007 Class A championship game loss to Oregon-Davis are an Indiana championship-game record for either gender in both the one-class and multi-class eras. Forced by epileptic seizures to redshirt her freshman year at Vincennes University, she returned for the 2008-09 season and helped the Lady Trailblazers reach the 16-team national junior college tournament.
Now, besides coping with periodic seizures, she also deals with the fact her father Chuck Cochren, 6-9 center for Wood Memorial and Oakland City University in the 1980s, is battling Type 4 colon cancer.
“I was in University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington when dad found out he has cancer and he called me.
“It was quite a shock. I try to see him as much as I can even though I can’t drive. Dad comes to see me. My boyfriend Matt Agan, from Evansville, sometimes drives me to Bloomington to see dad. My grandparents (Charlie and Daphne Cochren of Oakland City) also take me up there.”
Kaiti Cochren played for Division I Eastern Kentucky as a backup center the 2009-10 season, and expected to play last season. Her career ended with an auto accident near the Richmond, Ky., campus.
“I was driving and had a seizure. When I regained consciousness about three minutes later, I guess, a policeman was there. I hadn’t run into another car, but I’d hit a pole.

Beagles are a healthy breed, often living for 12 to 15 years, but they do have a few common health problems.
The Beagle's ears are long and floppy, which can trap warm moist air or prevent air from reaching the ear canals. This condition can be successfully treated with regular cleaning daily and sometimes medication for major cases. A good preventative measure is a diet consisting of lamb and rice dog food. Careless bathing can get water into their ears, potentially causing ear infections.
Sometimes their eyelashes grow into the eye and irritate the eye, also known as distichiasis; this might require surgery to remove the eyelashes.
Obesity is a common health problem due to people overfeeding them in response to their playful and gentle behavior. Most will overeat if given the chance. A healthy Beagle should have some definition to its waist and have an hourglass appearance when viewed from above. You should be able to feel their ribs. Excessive weight can lead to problems such as hip dysplasia and heart trouble. They need exercise and a good diet. The American Kennel Club and the Canadian Kennel Club recognize two separate varieties of Beagle: the 13-inch for hounds less than 13 inches, and the 15-inch for those between 13 and 15 inches. The Kennel Club (UK) and FCI affiliated clubs recognize a single type, with a height of between 13 and 16 inches. These standard dogs can reach 35 lb or more.
The Beagle has a smooth, somewhat oval skull; a medium-length, square-cut muzzle; a black, gumdrop nose; large, hound-like hazel or brown eyes; long, velveteen, low-set ears (big), turning towards the cheeks slightly and rounded at the tips; a medium-length, strong neck without folds in the skin; a broad chest narrowing to a tapered abdomen and waist; a short, slightly curved tail; an overall muscular body; and a medium-length, smooth, hard coat. One standard calls for ideally shaped beagles to be twice as long as tall, and twice as tall as wide.
