Presents, printers and iPads
After all, that's the hot new gadget everyone is talking about these days, right? But when Dec. 25 rolls around (and believe me, I can definitely wait for Dec. 25 to roll around), I predict no iPad will be sitting underneath my artificial Christmas tree. But that's OK, folks, I don't need an iPad. Those toys aren't cheap, and I don't feel like raising my "debt ceiling" to get one. But the fact that the Hillsboro City Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to give themselves iPads doesn't have me feeling warm and fuzzy at all. And considering there have been 65 online comments (as of this writing) on the column Katie Wright wrote on the subject - along with two dozen more online comments on Katie's July 21 story on said subject - a lot of folks feel the same way. Granted, some of the commenters are A-OK with the board deciding to use taxpayer money to give themselves iPads. But the vast majority are not OK with it at all. Nor should they be.Apples to oranges, you say? Maybe you're right. But in all my travels, I have never seen members of a school board vote to give themselves expensive gadgets funded by taxpayers until the Hillsboro board chose to do so on July 20. I also do not see taxpayer-funded iPads at city council meetings, SSCC meetings or commissioner meetings. Ladies and gentlemen, the district is giving its school board members iPads, yet has removed printers from teachers' rooms this summer. That is a fact. I think we all know why a district would remove printers from classrooms ($$$$). Now, I bet the board and administration would give (or maybe sell) the printers back to the teachers - if the teachers agree to pay for the paper and toner.
