Gridiron gladiators return to Nicholson
(Editor's Note: This is the fourth instalment of The Intelligencer's Year In Review, a look back at some of the memorable moments in sports in Belleville and the Quinte region in 2011.)
SEPTEMBER
— In a first-place showdown with the Cataraqui Clippers in Kingston, the Belleville U11 Comets boys soccer team romped to an 11-1 win to take the SOSA division title. Joe Roy lead the Comets attack with three goals.
— The news was both good and bad for the Belleville Bulls after Day 1 of scrimmages at the club's 2011-12 OHL pre-season training camp at Yardmen Arena. First, the bad news. Returning defenceman Branden Morris went down with a torn Achilles tendon and could be lost until Christmas — or longer. In the good news department, Bulls signed Russian forward Danny Zharkov (6-3, 195), Belleville's first-round pick in the 2011 CHL import draft.
— It wasn't gold, but members of the Canadian men's heavyweight eight will gladly wait to trade their bronze medal for a more valuable bauble when they compete in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. With Belleville's Brian Price in his familiar cox position, the Canadian men placed third in the finals of the world rowing championships in Slovenia.
— Thurlow demolition derby driver Tim Smith earned a tough third-place finish in the main feature at the 66th annual Crawford County Fair competition held in Meadville, Pennsylvania, where he was top Canadian in the field. Smith, 49, marked his 30th year of derby-driving.
— Wellington Dukes defenceman Rusty Hafner signed a scholarship deal to play NCAA hockey with Bowling Green (Ohio) State University.
— THS Track Quest fundraising co-ordinators, Paul Whitley and Duncan Armstrong, were busy pounding the pavement to let the public know support for the project is still needed. "THS Track Quest is nearing the home stretch toward meeting the goal of raising $500,000 by Dec. 31," said Armstrong. About $300,000 has already been raised. The track has been virtually unusable for years. Potholes, crevices, cracks and heaving pavement all pose a safety hazard.
