It was no "circus" at the Frazee City Council meeting Monday, Aug. 8 - although the appearance last week by the Big Top in the city was mentioned.
Actually, this week's governmental session was routine, with the largest task the approval of a resolution that could pave the way for Frazee to take over the current lease held by Becker County on Lions Park.
At present, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) owns the property, Becker County holds an ongoing lease and provides upkeep, and the Frazee Lions also maintain much of the facility, including the building and maintenance of picnic shelters and other structures. The Lions hold spring and fall work sessions, while regular mowing within the spacious facility is usually done by the county jail's Sentence to Serve corps.
A motion was approved for the city to complete a proposed agreement to take over the county's lease with the possibility of purchasing the parkland in 2013. One of the reasons for Becker County's desire to pass the lease along to Frazee is because the park is essentially within the city limits.
The three-year lease approved in the resolution would carry a cost of $150 per year.
On a light note, City Clerk-Administrator Jonathan Smith informed the council that the city's percentage of pre-performance ticket sales for the recent circus presentation will likely be used for new banners to go along Main Avenue. The council approved a measure that would pass along the $230 received to the Frazee Area Community Club (FACC) in its effort to purchase new banners.
Public Works Director Larry Stephenson explained that the old banners - one set for summer tourist season and another for winter - have shown considerable wear.
