Chilly Dog Walk in Cheshire beats the snow
CHESHIRE — Living up to its name, the Chilly Dog Walk attracted about 100 dogs and their owners on a brisk Saturday morning for some fun before the snowstorm hit.
Hosted by the Soul Friends, a non-profit animal therapy program, this year the friends teamed up with the Cheshire Dog Park Committee to help raise funds for a fence around the park as well as raising money for the pet therapy group.
“This event is to celebrate the human animal bond,” said Friends founder Kate Nicoll. “A lot of people braved the weather to come out.”
In addition to a fall walk in the in the woods, the event included several vendors, displays and performances. Nancy True of North Canton, performed a dance routine with her dogs Ella and Boon. They are part of the Top Hats and Tails organization.
“I saw somebody doing it an obedience,” True said of how she got her start. “Ella has been doing it since she was 6 months.”
The crowd gave the team a big round of applause after watching True lead the dogs through rolls, crossing under her legs, jumping up and touching toes to the music.
Next up was a demonstration from State Trooper Anthony Cristy and his K9 partner Axel. Cristy explained how Axel tracks down suspects and finds items by scent. Axel sat at attention inside the police cruiser but was quick to jump out the window every time Cristy called him for a demonstration.
Spectators threw different items around the cruiser for Axel to track. On command, Axel would leap from the window and immediately focus on using his nose to locate the item. When found, he would pounce near the item and lay down to let Cristy know he found it.
“I have all these tools on my belt, but he is the one tool no one can use against me,” Cristy said of having Axel as a partner.
