Vow to 'weight' & see Northwestern QB's bid
The package arrived about two weeks ago and had me completely baffled.
I hadn't purchased weight-loss pills on eBay or ordered a self-help book from Amazon, though both probably would be of use. And the package was heavy.
My doorman, Joe, who seems to know what I need before I do, handed me a pair of scissors. He held the box; I cut.
Inside was a purple shoe box holding a pair of purple -- Northwestern purple -- dumbbells. They weighed seven pounds each and were inscribed with the No. 7, the jersey number of Wildcats quarterback Dan Persa.
We wrote about Persa last week because the guy is a bona fide freak. Pound for pound, he's the strongest college quarterback in America, and he is the perfect player to run Northwestern's spread attack.
His 2010 campaign, and his team's quest for a 10-win season, was ruptured when Persa tore his right Achilles tendon Nov. 13 against Iowa. The Wildcats lost their last three.
He has rehabbed the leg after surgery, and was picked as the Big Ten's preseason first-team quarterback. (Yes, Terrelle Pryor would have had the honor had he not left Ohio State amid a wave of NCAA violations).
Northwestern's top-shelf media relations director, Mike Wolf, mailed out about 70 pairs of dumbbells, hoping to pump up Persa's Heisman Trophy chances.
Some might call it excessive, but Northwestern isn't on national TV every week like Notre Dame or Alabama, so Wolf decided to do some heavy lifting.
Persa was not thrilled by the tactic. He is one of those players who would be delighted to spend his free time working out. He prefers to talk about his teammates and program than himself.
He begrudgingly agreed to the Heisman campaign only after "higher ups," as he called them, at Northwestern convinced Persa the publicity is as much for the program as it is for him.
"Any publicity that can get people to pay more attention to Northwestern and get more people in the stands and more people watching the games is good for the program," Persa said. "If I have to carry that burden, I'm fine with it.
