Napa 97/98 boys are national soccer champs

A year after the Napa National All-Stars put their city on the national baseball map by qualifying for the Little League West Regionals, a team of players just a little older have the country now seeing the valley as a soccer mecca.
The Napa Valley Soccer Club 97/98 Boys have been walking tall as national champions since Aug. 1, when they defeated Three Rivers of Longview, Wash., on penalty kicks to win the Under-13 Boys Premier Division at the four-day US Club Soccer National Cup X in Boise, Idaho.
“It helped give us more confidence, to go to nationals and then win it,” said Brian Arcila, one of several players who talked about the experience before Thursday’s practice at Redwood Middle School. “It gives us confidence in all our matches.”
The big weekend began bright and early on July 28 when the team departed in three fully packed vans at 4:30 a.m. They traveled more than 12 hours before arriving at about 5 p.m. and immediately headed to tournament headquarters to register. Then it was dinner and off to bed for an early opening game the next morning.
“It was tough after that boring 12-hour drive,” said forward Jessie Eusebio, who led Napa with eight goals in the tournament. “We needed to sleep early but none of us slept early. We were too excited.”
Napa head coach Horacio Arcila just kept reminding the players that at least they didn’t have to travel clear across the country, to a place like North Carolina where the nationals are usually held.

They've been with their son through ups and downs from his days with the Valley Lions in the Valley West Little League through Bishop Hafey junior high to Hazleton Area High School, including summers when Russ played American Legion ball.
