Teen Pregnancy Rate Up in W.Va. and Ky.
In West Virginia, the number of teen births in 2008 was nearly 2,800. That's the most recent year for the data just released. It's about a 60 point increase from the previous year.
In Kentucky, the number of teens giving birth hit 7,600. That's also up nearly 90 points.
In Ohio, there were 16,000 teen births. Although that number is high, it actually went down about 160 points from 2007.
In West Virginia, the numbers have nearly stabilized as a whole. So, what are local schools doing right to fix the problem? And for those still struggling, what are they changing? It depends on who you ask.
“I was in the 9th grade when I found out I was pregnant,” Elizabeth Lawhon said.
Pregnant at 15 was the last way Elizabeth Lawhon planned to start her high school career.
“I asked my mom how I was going to do it, and she said, 'You’re just going to do it,' ” Elizabeth said.
Elizabeth stayed in school. Two years later, starting her junior year at Cabell Midland High School, she's a full-time student and full-time single mom to Kalie, who's 16-months old.
“My mom supports me, and my aunt,” Elizabeth said.
While West Virginia has seen a slight increase in the teen pregnancy rate, Cabell County has flattened out -- it's not any better, but not any worse either.
Other counties in our region haven't fared so well. Clay and Lincoln counties saw the sharpest increase. We checked in with Clay County this spring. They say having only one guidance counselor and 300 female students causes a real problem. But, they are working to hire more counselors.
“When you talk to high school students in large groups, it can be problematic especially when dealing with such a sensitive subject as teen pregnancy,” Clay County Schools Superintendent Kenneth Tanner said.
“The important thing is to get good sex education about contraception,” said Margie Hale with West Virginia Kids Count.

And these days, sometimes one ultrasound is not enough. "It's pretty common to get two or three now," Bloomhuff said. "A lot of obstetricians will do one early on to make sure there's a heartbeat, so a seven- or eight-week ultrasound.
“Some students think you can't get pregnant the first time," sex education teacher Jimmy Clayton said. "They think it's like in golf with a mulligan, you get a do over and that's not true." Clayton teaches sex education at Cabell Midland.
